Over the last seven years, I have consulted with four experts who have spent a lot of time evaluating what each park has to offer. I have collated their notes to create this list of the best dog parks in Bend, Oregon.
What they look for:
Large space to explore
Variety of natural elements
Completely fenced in
A path to go on a walk
Meet the experts:
Pine Nursery

Scout's top pick. This massive 14-acre park has a lot to offer all types of dogs. At the front of the park an extensive trail system awaits the trailblazers, which opens up into a huge grass field where the extroverts gather. Continuing south leads to another trail system highlighted by large rock piles for the mountaineers to explore. Complete the loop and you arrive at an open dirt play space. Trees are scattered throughout, about as dense as you can expect in east Bend.
Big Sky

One of Daisy's favorites, the 12-acre Big Sky is really three parks in one. Entering through the main gate puts you in a dirt enclosure with wide paths and sparse trees. Daisy enjoys this section but is always eager to push on. A small gated passage connects the two sides with a water spout in between for a welcome stop before entering stage two, which is the main gathering spot and home to the only grass in the park. After some meet-and-greets and a good chase, the exploration continues with dirt paths and boulders to navigate. Eventually the final gate reveals a trail system that is Daisy's favorite part of the whole park.
Alpenglow

Of all the parks on this list, Alpenglow is the best for social dogs like Sunny. You are barely through the gate before your dog has made three new friends. Two large grass fields alternate being open to give the grass time to recover from the rough and tumble play. Further in is the best dog obstacle course in Bend, with options for beginners and seasoned athletes alike. The tall ponderosas throw excellent shade on a hot day. The back of the park is quieter and a nice change of pace if your dog needs a break from the action. Paved trails connect all three exits and a desire path in the back makes it easy to do a full lap.
Ponderosa

Smaller and lower trafficked than the others, Ponderosa is Oliver's pick and still has a lot going for it. The main play area greets you right after the gate, well shaded with a small trail tucked in the back. Heading toward the north end of the park you pass a water station for a thoughtful mid-walk stop. The loop through the park takes about five minutes, and if you keep your eyes open you will find a few secret trails branching off along the way. A great option when you want a relaxed visit without the crowd.
Be a responsible dog owner
City of Bend law requires dogs to be leashed in public except in official off-leash areas. Please clean up after your dog so these parks stay great for everyone.
